Q: I've heard that you should eat breakfast because it kickstarts your metabolism. Will my metabolism drop if I miss breakfast?
A: This is a very common claim that I'll set you straight on. Around 15% of your total daily metabolic rate is accounted for by energy cost of digesting food. So, yes eating breakfast will cost energy to digest and will increase your metabolic rate slightly.
However, its not the case that if you miss breakfast, your metabolic rate will drop. It takes around 24 hours for this to happen in response to not eating or eating considerably less.
It's how much you eat over a 24 hour period that is important for your metabolic rate. So, if you miss breakfast but eat what you missed at breakfast with lunch or dinner then it all evens out.
And think about this - just getting out of bed in the morning and walking around the house boosts your metabolic rate to about three times what it was during sleep. So, if there is anything that actually kickstarts your metabolism in the morning, its just getting up.
Of course, there are other compelling reasons to eat breakfast, like fueling your body well and fending off mid-morning cravings.
Think of it this way - breakfast kickstarts good nutrition and appetite management for the day, but movement boosts your metabolism.
